1967-10-30 USSR Kosmos 186 & 188

Kosmos 186 and Kosmos 188 were two uncrewed spacecraft from the Soviet Union that achieved the first fully automated space docking in the history of space exploration on October 30, 1967. Kosmos 186 was launched first on October 27, 1967, followed by Kosmos 188 three days later. With Kosmos 186 taking the active role in the docking process, the two spacecraft successfully docked just 62 minutes after the launch of Kosmos 188, the passive target spacecraft. The IGLA system onboard Kosmos 186 automatically managed the mutual search, approach, mooring, and docking. After 3.5 hours of joint flight, the spacecraft separated following a command sent from Earth and continued to orbit independently. Both spacecraft made a soft landing in a predetermined region of the Soviet Union—Kosmos 186 on October 31, 1967, and Kosmos 188 on November 2, 1967.

The automatic docking mission showcased a new capability for the Soviet Union that would prove valuable for their later Salyut and Mir space station programs. This mission also demonstrated the feasibility of launching smaller components and assembling them in space, thereby reducing the necessity for excessively large rockets for major projects like a space station.

1962-07-28 USSR Kosmos 7

Kosmos 7 was part of a series of Soviet Earth satellites designed to study outer space, the upper atmosphere, and the Earth itself. It transmitted scientific data and measurements back to Earth using multichannel telemetry systems equipped with onboard memory units. In addition to reconnaissance, the satellite was used to measure radiation for safety purposes during the flights of the Vostok 3 and Vostok 4 spacecraft.

1962-06-30 USSR Kosmos 6

Kosmos 6 was a prototype radar target satellite designed for anti-ballistic missile tests. Its main mission was to demonstrate the technologies required for radar tracking of spacecraft, enabling future satellites to serve as targets. It was also the first solar-powered satellite produced by Yuzhnoye.

1962-05-28 USSR Kosmos 5

Kosmos 5 was the fifth satellite designated under the Kosmos system and the third spacecraft launched as part of the MS program, following Kosmos 2 and Kosmos 3. Its primary missions included developing systems for future satellites and gathering data on artificial radiation around the Earth. Kosmos 5 was the second-to-last MS satellite to be launched and the last one to successfully reach orbit. It was among several satellites inadvertently damaged or destroyed by the Starfish Prime high-altitude nuclear test on July 9, 1962, and the resulting radiation belt.

1962-04-26 USSR Kosmos 4

Kosmos 4 was the first Soviet reconnaissance satellite to successfully achieve orbit. It was a low-resolution reconnaissance satellite based on the Vostok spacecraft used for crewed missions. The satellite's four-day mission aimed to measure radiation levels before and after the U.S. nuclear tests during Project Starfish Prime—a high-altitude nuclear test conducted on July 9, 1962, which was the largest nuclear test in outer space. However, leaks from the oxygen system tanks used for orientation caused Kosmos 4 to return prematurely after three days of operation. For much of its flight, the spacecraft was uncontrollable until it was deorbited and landed by parachute on April 29, 1962. It was subsequently recovered by Soviet forces in the steppe of Kazakhstan.

1962-04-06 USSR Kosmos 2

Kosmos 2 was the second satellite designated under the Kosmos system. Its main missions were to develop technologies for future satellites and to gather data on cosmic rays and radiation. It was the first satellite launched as part of the MS program—a series of Soviet satellites aimed at technology demonstration and development. These satellites also included payloads to study radiation and cosmic rays.

1962-03-16 USSR Kosmos 1

Kosmos 1 was the first satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1962 as part of the Kosmos system. It marked the first successful spacecraft to reach orbit under the Dnepropetrovsk Sputnik program. Its main objectives were to assess the performance of its launch vehicle and to conduct research on the ionosphere.
