1954-01-01 USA Port Canaveral Post Office First Day Cancellation

A cover commemorating the first day of operation of the Port Canaveral post office, postmarked at Port Canaveral with a hand cancel on January 1, 1954, marking the first day the new post office designation was used.

The "Port Canaveral" post office operated from 1954 to 1962. The name was changed from "Artesia" to "Port Canaveral" on January 1, 1954. In the subsequent years, numerous space-related event covers from the early U.S. space program were canceled at this post office.
