The Space Race was a technological competition between the United States and the Soviet Union in demonstrating superiority in aerospace capabilities, including artificial satellites launches, robotic space probes to the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and human spaceflight in low Earth orbit and ultimately landing on the Moon. The Soviet crew for the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project—cosmonauts Aleksey A. Leonov and Valeriy N. Kubasov—arrived at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas on April 15, 1974, to take part in joint training sessions with their NASA counterparts.
