1972-05-24 USSR USA and Soviet Union Sign Space Treaty

On May 24, 1972, during a summit in Moscow, U.S. President Richard M. Nixon and Soviet Premier Aleksei N. Kosygin signed an agreement on space cooperation. One part of the agreement proposed creating a docking system that would allow their spacecraft to connect in orbit. This later led to the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project, the first international human spaceflight in July 1975.
