| While Lunar Orbiter 1 was transmitting photographs of the Moon to Earth, the Soviets launched Luna 11 on August 24, 1966, which reached the Moon on August 28. Luna 11 was designed to test new technologies and completed 277 orbits before its mission ended on October 1, 1966. |
