1964-03-19 USA Gemini Capsule Recovery Test

A Gemini capsule recovery test cover from "Goldcraft", postmarked aboard USS Wallace L. Lind with a rare hand cancel on March 19, 1964.
In early March 1964, the USS Wallace L. Lind was assigned as a special-project ship for the Gemini/Apollo test program. Large cranes were installed on her fantail to facilitate the recovery of spacecraft mock-ups. The recovery tests used a simulated Gemini capsule rather than an actual crewed spacecraft, as the Navy worked with NASA to develop and refine procedures for locating, approaching, and safely recovering spacecraft following splashdown.
