1962-07-25 USA Test Flight 4 of Titan II

Titan II Missile N-4 was launched from Cape Canaveral LC-16 on July 25, 1962. The flight proceeded smoothly until the first stage burn, but a malfunction occurred in the second stage when the hydraulic pump failed, causing thrust to drop by nearly 50%. The engine continued to run for an additional 111 seconds until the propellant was exhausted. The impact occurred 1,500 miles (2,400 km) downrange, which was half the intended distance. The cover above is postmarked at PAFB on the day of the launch, July 25, 1962.
