Titan II N-1 was the second flight of the Titan II and was launched from Cape Canaveral Launch Complex 15 with a Mark 6 reentry vehicle. Although the first stage performed normally, the second-stage sustainer developed low thrust because of reduced oxidizer flow through the gas generator. The flight was terminated early, and the reentry vehicle impacted approximately 1,100 miles downrange, well short of the intended target.
The Titan II N-1 test was an important early Titan II developmental flight, exposing a second-stage propulsion problem that had to be resolved as the missile was being evaluated for eventual use as the launch vehicle for NASA’s Project Gemini.
