The vehicle was Scout X-1A ST-8, launched from Launch Area 3 at Wallops Island on March 1, 1962. It was the first of a series of Scout missions specifically designed to study the extreme heating experienced by spacecraft during atmospheric reentry. The mission carried a small reentry vehicle to high altitude before accelerating it to approximately 30,500 km/h for a controlled atmospheric reentry over the Atlantic. The experiment was designed to study aerodynamic heating and the performance of reentry-vehicle materials, providing valuable data for the development of spacecraft heat shields. This early research formed part of the technological groundwork for the safe return of future manned spacecraft, including Apollo.
