Beach Abort Test launch cover with Goldcraft cachet, postmarked Wallops Island, May 9, 1960. |
The Space Race was a technological competition between the United States and the Soviet Union in demonstrating superiority in aerospace capabilities, including artificial satellites launches, robotic space probes to the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and human spaceflight in low Earth orbit and ultimately landing on the Moon. This blog features my collection of US and Soviet Union space events on covers and press photos.
1960-05-09 USA Mercury Beach Abort Test
The Beach Abort Test aimed to showcase the functionality of the escape system, parachute system, and other landing equipment during an off-the-pad abort, without the use of a booster. The escape system was activated, landing 1,000 yards from the launch stand. A HUS helicopter recovered the spacecraft 20 minutes after liftoff and returned it to Wallops Island. All objectives were successfully met. This test marked the first use of the McDonnell Aircraft Corp. Mercury spacecraft, as previous tests had utilized boilerplate capsules.
