The Space Race was a technological competition between the United States and the Soviet Union in demonstrating superiority in aerospace capabilities, including artificial satellites launches, robotic space probes to the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and human spaceflight in low Earth orbit and ultimately landing on the Moon. This blog features my collection of US and Soviet Union space events on covers and press photos.
1958-07-30 USSR International Geophysical Year - 2nd series (VCSAGI)
This is the second set in a series of three issues of Russian stamps commemorating the International Geophysical Year (IGY). The stamps were released on July 29, 1958, but the covers displayed here were postmarked on July 30, 1958, to mark the first day of the CSAGI Assembly in Moscow, titled "Opening of the 5th Meeting of the Special Committee for the IGY 1957/58."
