While Lunar Orbiter 1 was sending photographs of the moon back to earth, the Soviets launched Luna 11 on August 24, 1966, which reached moon on August 28. Luna 11 was designed to test new technology, completed 277 orbits before its mission was terminated on 1 October 1966.
